Exchange Students

Exchange students take a series of subjects from any one of the degree programmes that ESCI-UPF offers as part of an official exchange programme.

You can become an exchange student at ESCI-UPF if you are a student at any of the universities with which ESCI-UPF has an Erasmus+ or bilateral exchange agreement.

Admission requirements and procedures

NOMINATION
  1. Your home university emails us your nomination (incoming@esci.upf.edu), including your name, email address and the number of terms you plan to spend at ESCI-UPF (T1: September to December; T2: January to March; T3: April to June).
  2. Nominated students are emailed application materials and instructions.
  3. Nominated students upload their application to the SIGMA platform.
  4. Accepted students receive a letter of admission (PDF) in Catalan and English on the platform (for informative purposes only).
  5. Accepted students from outside the EU receive an acceptance letter (PDF) in Spanish listing the courses they have been accepted on (for visa purposes only).
  6. Accepted students may apply for a student visa at a Spanish consulate (if applicable).

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

The languages of instruction at ESCI-UPF are Catalan, Spanish and English, depending on the course. There is a list of subjects taught in English and a list of subjects taught in Catalan or Spanish*. The language of instruction is clearly stated in the teaching plan for each subject.

ESCI-UPF does not set any specific language requirements for exchange students, although we recommend you have at least CEFR Level B1 in Spanish or CEFR Level B2 in English to make the most of the range of subjects on offer.

Academic information

GENERAL STRUCTURE OF CLASSES
  • Class format. Students learn through lectures, case studies, team assignments, presentations and required readings.
  • Attendance. Students should attend at least 80% of classes in order to be awarded a mark for attendance and participation.
  • Class sizes. Classes range in size from 20 to 60 students, depending on the course.
CREDITS

There is a minimum course load for exchange students:

  • 20 ECTS credits for one-term students
  • 30 ECTS credits for two-term students
  • 60 ECTS credits for three-term students

Full-time Spanish students generally take an average of 5 courses per term (20 ECTS credits/term, 60 ECTS credits/academic year).
