Biography

Joan Garcia-Porta is an evolutionary biologist who is interested in understanding the ecological processes that produce and shape phenotypic and species diversity. He approaches his research from a wide perspective, drawing on phylogenetics, functional morphology, ecology, statistical modelling and genomics. He has worked in research centres in Spain and abroad, including Belgium, Australia and the United States. He is currently working in the Genetics Department at the Universitat de Barcelona.

Description

This course covers the fundamental concepts underpinning DNA and protein sequence evolution, from within populations to between species, as well as their basic applications. Subjects include the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, linkage disequilibrium and gene mapping, the coalescent theory, neutrality-based tests and phylogenetic reconstruction. It will also explore the main computer algorithms and software to understand the patterns and process underlying DNA (and protein) sequence evolution, as well as to build phylogenetic trees.
